Big Bone Lick State Park is located at 3380 Beaver Rd, Union, Ky, which lies between Beaverlick and Rabbit Hash in Boone County.  (Phone: 859.384.3522)  It was named after the Pleistocene megafauna fossils found there and is on the National Register of Historic places, along with being a designated an official Lewis and Clark Heritage Trail Site.

 

 It is believed that mammoths gravited to this area because of the salt lick, but the area around the springs was very soft, so a lot of the animals got stuck with no way to escape.  The park's museum center features many of these fossils, along with an unique 1,000 lb mastodon skull! 

 

 Big Bone Lick State Park in Union, KY has been home to the Salt Festival for many years.  This year marks the 26th anniversary of the festival.  If you've never been to this celebration, you are definately in for a treat!  The Salt Festival features all kinds of activities for kids and adults alike.  Of course, it wouldn't be a Salt Festival without a demonstration on salt making, but you'll find lots of other interesting demonstrations and activities, too, such as tomohawk throwing, primitive fire starting, spear throwing and weaving, along with great storytelling, uplifting music and all kinds of things related to pioneer and Native American life.  And don't forget to taste the great food available throughout the festival!  

 

On Friday, 10.19.12, school group field trips will be running from 9:00 - 3:00 pm., with school admission at $1 per child.  Sat. and Sun. prices are $4 per person, with 6 yrs and under for free.
