About Lead Based Paint

Homes that were built prior to 1978 have a good chance of having lead based paint.  The US government banned lead based paint in 1978, so moving forward, homes built after that year no longer contained lead.  Lead from paint and from lead contaminated dust is the number one cause of lead poisoning in the US.

If your home was built prior to 1978, then under all the layers of paint that are currently present, there may be a layer of lead based paint.  This is usually not an issue as long as the current paint "encapsulates" the other layers.  The problem occurs when the paint breaks down and exposes layers that may contain the lead based paint.

When you purchase a home built prior to 1978, you will sign a Lead Based Paint Addendum to alert you to the possibility of lead based paint.  You can do more research now to be an informed buyer by visiting the EPA website for more information on protecting your family from lead based paint.
